When Should The Wire Rope Be Replaced

1. When the time specified by relevant regulations, manufacturers and/or companies expires, the steel wire needs to be replaced.

2. Within a lay length (equivalent to 8 to 10 times the diameter of the wire rope), the whole wire rope has 10% broken wires, or a certain strand has 5% broken wires. Twist length refers to the distance that the strands move when the strands spiral around the core, that is, the distance occupied by the number of strands along the length of the core.

3. When the diameter of the steel wire is worn and reduced by 7% of the original nominal diameter of the steel wire, in any case, the chief mate of the cargo crane needs to carefully check the specifications of the crane and the steel wire and comply with their regulations. Of course, when measuring the diameter of the wire rope, the first officer must use the correct method, and must always measure the frequently moving parts of the wire rope that are easy to wear.

4. When a whole strand of the whole wire rope is broken or the steel wire is severely corroded/rusted, the linseed core expands

5. The total length of the wire rope after stretching exceeds 5% of the original length.

In order to ensure the normal operation of the ship crane, there should be enough spare wire ropes on board to prepare for wake-up when necessary; therefore, the chief mate must check the spare wire in stock every month and make an inventory list.
